Creating Pie Charts with Nature’s Colours 🍁

13th Nov 2025

This week at Forest School, Year 4 combined outdoor learning with maths skills by focusing on pie charts! Building on what we’ve been learning in class about interpreting and creating pie charts, the children took their knowledge into the forest for a hands-on activity.

Using hula hoops as their chart frames and chalk to draw dividing lines, the children worked in teams to create their own pie charts on the forest floor. Each group collected leaves in different colours and sorted them into sections. They aimed to find 20, 10, 5 and 5 items in different colours, then arranged them to represent data visually.

This activity was a fantastic way to reinforce mathematical concepts while enjoying the outdoors. It encouraged problem-solving, teamwork and creativity - all while connecting learning to nature.
