✂️Abstract art in Year 1/2!🎨

18th Feb 2026

This week in Year 1/2 we have been learning about the artist Alma Thomas, who is known for her colourful abstract artwork and her use of repeated shapes and bold patterns. We explored how she used lots of different colours to create movement and energy in her paintings.

With Spring just around the corner, we have started to notice the first signs of the season, including daffodils, tulips and crocuses beginning to bloom. Inspired by Alma Thomas and the changes happening around us, we created our own abstract Spring artwork.

The children used a mosaic-style technique, carefully cutting and sticking small pieces of coloured paper to design their own bright flower gardens. As they worked, they developed their understanding of warm and cool colours and how different shades can work together. The careful cutting and placing of each piece also helped to strengthen their fine motor skills.

The class chose to call their collection “A Garden of Rainbows”, which perfectly captures the colour, creativity and joy in their work.

We are so proud of their imaginative designs and we cannot wait to display these beautiful pieces of art in our classroom for the upcoming season of Spring.
