Exploring Frequency Tables in Nature
Today, Year 4 took their Numeracy learning outdoors as part of their Forest School experience, diving into the topic of data handling with a focus on frequency tables.
The session began in the classroom, where pupils learned what frequency tables are, how they are used, and why they are important in organising and interpreting data. With their new knowledge in hand, the class headed outside to enjoy the crisp autumn air and apply their learning in a hands-on, nature-based activity.
Each pupil collected a variety of autumn leaves from the forest school area, observing differences in shape, size, and colour. They then worked in small groups to sort and count their leaves, recording their findings in frequency tables they created themselves. This practical approach helped reinforce their understanding of data collection and representation in a fun and engaging way.
The children thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to learn outside the classroom, combining maths with the beauty of the changing season. It was a lovely autumn afternoon filled with curiosity, collaboration, and colourful leaves!
